Energy is all there is.  It feeds, nourishes, balances, supports growth, light, colour…
and it heals us.

Four types of energy healing
A touch of research
Heal yourself

We all have a great ability to heal ourselves.  Over time many of us have become disconnected or have forgotten how to tune into our own mind and body, our own energy system, in order to support the healing process.  In ancient times this was known and practiced as standard.  Today, an increasing body of research continues to evidence the positive outcomes of energy healing.

The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force for getting well

Four types of energy healing therapies

All energy healing works with a person’s energy system, energy within us (through our energy channels or meridians), and around us (our aura or biofield), some refer to this as ‘Chi’ energy or ‘Prana’.  Therapies can be hands-on or hands-off; acupressure and EFT for example would be hands-on and reiki may be done hands-off.  Therapists may use or combine other sources of energy within a treatment, for example from crystals, sound, or colour; all of which have a vibrational energy of their own.  The idea is to stimulate, shift, balance or raise the vibrational energy in order to support the client to relax, de-stress, and heal.  Here are the energy therapies I work with, and adore.

Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese technique which goes back to at least the 18th century, Mikao Usui is well known as one of the initial practitioners of reiki.  Rei means universal spirit and Ki (or chi) means life force; the vitality that gives life to all living things (energy).

It is excellent for stress reduction and relaxation, as well as promoting healing.  Reiki is my passion. I was first attuned to reiki around 2006 and today I am a Usui/Holy Fire III reiki master and teacher. I have had so many happy stories from clients who have had reiki with me.  I love to practice it as a pure energy or combine it with meditation, aromatherapy or crystals. Over the past 40 years reiki has become increasingly popular in the Western world as a non invasive and non medicated therapy.  Reiki works holistically across mind, body and spirit by channelling energy through your therapist and stimulating your own natural healing abilities.

Reiki is love, Love is wholeness, Wholeness is balance, balance is well being, Well being is freedom from disease.
~ Dr Mikao Usui.

Chakra balancing
Chakras are our internal energy system, when they’re in balance we have feelings such as self confidence, compassion and peace.  When they’re out of balance or overdeveloped we can feel anxious, emotional, and can experience a whole range of mental, emotional and physical issues.  Along with treatments from qualified practitioners, it is possible to support the health and balance of your own chakras. Last months feature blog goes into more detail about each of the seven core chakras.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
This was created by Gary Craig as an adaption of  ‘Thought Field Therapy’ (founded by Roger Callahan), it is an energy healing based on traditional Chinese medicine concepts. There are many pressure points across the whole body, however, there are several core pressure points that are commonly used as a type of emotional and physical first aid.  Anyone can use EFT, and for almost anything; overcoming emotional baggage, pain, anxiety, addiction, phobias, and much more.   Professionally coached EFT works by getting to the root cause, or working through the layers of ‘aspects’ that a client comes with, the coaching and tapping process then provides ‘emotional freedom’ from any issue, and hence healing.

One patient suffering with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia picked up the technique that Gary founded, and described her experience after using ‘tapping’ as follows:

Over the last fortnight I am amazed by the differences in me. My health, my attitude, my thoughts, my ability to deal with stress, my acceptance of things outside my control and of myself and others.

Energy through movement
You don’t have to sweat to do your body tons of good!

I crafted my own energy movement routine over a two year period, MoGaChi, which is a subtle body movement combining energy routines and specific asanas from yoga practice (adapted for the routine).
The movement session starts with mindfulness of your posture and finishes with a reiki relaxation,  promoting deep breathing and posture mindfulness throughout.  The asanas chosen not only open up each of the seven core chakras but aim to flex, tone, lengthen and strengthen your body.  In addition, because these are slow and mindful moves, hatha style yogas promote relaxation and peace.  The Tia Chi promotes controlled movement and breathing that works with the energy around your body; research shows that exercise that integrates personal awareness/mindfulness, such as Tai Chi, can improve recovery outcomes for those who have suffered a brain injury.  It is also another excellent way to promote a calm mind and reduce stress and anxiety.  Qigong works on key acupressure points along our meridians (energy channels within our body).  It
has  been shown to improve health recovery in areas such as reducing the side effects of aggressive interventions such as chemotherapy.  In this routine the moves help to stimulate major organs, blood flow, and lymphatic flow.  These are combined with further energy moves that work across the inner and outer energy system to balance and open up energy channels, at the same time as working to improve your immune system, quieten your fight or flight response to stress, and again stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic system.

Research

Whilst modern nutritional and naturopathic medicine continues to develop complex and expensive approaches to the ever increasing mental and physical health problems of society, there is still a reluctance in some countries to explore and acknowledge the positive impact energy healing can have.  Perhaps due to an ever present pressure that evidence-based practice, or scientifically proven practice, is the single source of truth.  With that in mind, and whilst I’m not going to take up a lot of blog space on research, I  want to make a few links to demonstrate the wonderfully positive effects energy healing is having, and where there is a growing evidence base.  I urge you, however, not to be lead by evidence and science alone, trust your intuition; open your mind, heart and awareness, and something amazing will happen.

In an IRB approved, blinded and controlled, study which focused on the effects of reiki in patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, a statistically significant trend of pain reduction in the reiki group was seen over that of those in either the standard of care group or placebo reiki group. Only the reiki group showed post-operative diminution in blood pressure and respiratory rate. Whilst the placebo reiki group showed a decrease in anxiety, it was much less than the group receiving Reiki (Ref 1)

A 2010 research of medical QiGong for cancer patients saw marked changes in inflammation compared to the control group, and the medical QiGong group experienced significant improvement in overall quality of life.

A systematic review of  14 studies of Emotional freedom technique treatments for anxiety demonstrated a significant decrease in anxiety scores (Ref 2).

Conventional medicine, at its foundation, focuses on the biochemistry of cells, tissue, and organs. Energy Medicine, at its foundation, focuses on the energy fields of the body that organize and control the growth and repair of cells, tissue, and organs. Changing impaired energy patterns may be the most efficient, least invasive way to improve the vitality of organs, cells, and psyche ~ David Feinstein, Ph.D

It’s warming to know that the USA have embraced reiki as an effective therapeutic intervention in over 800 hospitals, and many 3rd sector charities and organisations use reiki and other alternative touch and aromatherapies to support clients wellbeing.  Let’s hope that this attitude to a non-invasive and gentle therapy continues to spread.

Heal yourself

Reiki
As well as going along to a reiki healing share or
class or receiving a reiki treatment, you can practice self reiki after taking your level I reiki practitioner training.  Once you’ve been attuned to the reiki energy you can give yourself a little bit of reiki love whenever you like, to relax or promote healing.  It is worth a note at this point, the vibrational energy of reiki is not equal in all people who have been attuned to it.  To channel the energy to higher vibrations one must commit to a reiki lifestyle, which includes practice, meditation, giving and receiving reiki and some possible lifestyle changes to your diet (if you want to tune in at a higher level).  If you’re interested in becoming a reiki practitioner I offer face to face and distance reiki training.

EFT (tapping)
Anyone can tap the basic routine and have some impact on what they’re trying to overcome or improve.  With a little practice and know how you can build this into a wellbeing routine.  Get your free pack with the routine and instructions (see below for details).  If you need to heal from a deep routed issue, this will most likely require an intervention of coaching and/or psychotherapy.

Take a class in yoga, Tai Chi & QiGong
There are lots of local classes available for each of these things, or if you’re local why not come along to my next MoGaChi class or a wellbeing afternoon – see class & events.

Move your energy
I use some of these moves in the MoGaChi routine, but if you want to incorporate a wonderful routine into your day then check out Professor Donna Eden’s video
